How JPF Got Started

Our story begins more than seven years ago with a daughter and a dream.  After losing her mother to Pancreatic Cancer in 2001,  Jen Brouwer wanted to honor her mother’s memory by helping families who, like her and her mother, felt many emotional and financial hardships while facing the cancer battle.

While caring for her mother. Jen learned first hand that money saved for college tuition can quickly deplete to help pay for costly cancer treatments and hospital stays. Once that money is gone, many times the dreams of attending college are lost as well.

Since she founded this organization in 2007, we have been able to give $140,000 in scholarships and help 50 students in the Toledo area!

Who is Janet Phleger?

Janet Phleger was a loving mother and friend who lost her battle with Pancreatic Cancer in 2001. She felt that knowledge was the key to success, and encouraged her daughter, founder and Executive Director Jen Brouwer, to never give up on her dreams of higher education, even when times became tough.

Butterflies for Scholarships

Our Annual #Butterflies4Scholarships giving campaign is going on right now! This year’s campaign will take place through the end of November.

This year, your annual, commemorative butterfly is designed to mimic the natural beauty of agate stone. Each one is hand-poured epoxy with inclusions of mica, glass, metallic flakes and pearl pigments. No two are alike! With edges painted gold, your butterfly comes with a wooden base and matching gold-colored pin to complete its free-standing display.

Your butterfly and base are pre-drilled, making it fast and east to proudly display your butterfly, knowing you helped local students in need.  And of course, at the heart of it all, our signature butterfly shape serves as a reminder of our mission: Providing college and trade school scholarships to local high school graduates whose parent or guardian has battled cancer.

OUR BEGINNING

In 2007, Jen founded the Janet Phleger Foundation to give hope to those in need of financial support. Our mission is to help lighten the financial burden of higher education by providing scholarships to graduating seniors in Lucas County whose parent or guardian has battled cancer. Over the past 11 years, we have given more than $104,000 and helped 38 high school graduates in the Greater Toledo Area with their college tuition.
